So this Dungeons and Dragons commission was a hefty task. It was the first full group of characters I have ever been tasked with and a short turnaround considering full-time work! I managed to complete it in time and learnt quite a lot in the process!
In the supplementary images, you can see my process, from sketch to 2D, the use of 3D and photo references to maximise the quality of the final piece.
After the initial sketch phase, I wanted to improve overall posing, layout, props, perspective and interaction between characters so I took advantage of the biped's in 3DS Max and used those to set proportions and heights of each character and set the scene, following my 2D sketch and WIP. This proved to be a powerful tool for managing big scenes and more complex 2D images. A lack of drawing skills or references in certain areas and be remedied with 3D so long as you know roughly what you want to achieve.
